BAHC now offering Digital Mammography

Boscobel Area Health Care is proud to offer state-of-the art digital mammography technology. The new mammography machine will ensure patients at Boscobel Area Health Care continue to have access to the latest technology and best possible preventive resources, said Radiology Manager Rita Ferrie.

"Digital mammography can provide better, more enhanced images using up to 40% less radiation," said Ferrie. "Because the images are computerized, it is also easier to get a second opinion and consult specialists."

The American Cancer Society recommends women over 40 have an annual mammogram. "Mammograms can evaluate any unusual changes in your breast, look for lumps too small to detect in a physical exam, and analyze existing lumps and growths that may need further testing," said Ferrie.

The average-size lump discovered by women accidently (not through self or physician exams) is1.42 inches (about the size of a quarter). The average-size lump found by women during a regular breast self exams is .83 inch (about the size of a dime). The average size lump detected by a routine mammogram is 0.43 (size of a pencil eraser). The latest technology, such as the machine used at Boscobel Area Health Care, can detect abnormalities even smaller.

"The earlier an abnormality is detected, the better the chance for successful treatment," said Ferrie. While breast cancer remains the second most common cancer in women in American, deaths caused by breast cancer continue to decline. "Women are more aware of the importance of early detection and screening, and are therefore discovering problems at earlier stages when treatment is most effective," Ferrie said.
