Two Boscobel High School sophomores were accepted to attend the 2010 AHEC Summer Health Careers Camp held this summer at UW-La Crosse.

Samantha Wilcox and Kelsey Trumm will spend five days at UW-La Crosse experiencing the first hand challenges, opportunities, and rewards of health professions. Both students are sponsored by Boscobel Area Health Care.

Trumm and Wilcox will explore a variety of careers, including surgeon, physical therapist, lab technician, and nursing. The hands-on activities are facilitated by health profession students, instructors and health care professionals. Diversity awareness and leadership skill training are also a part of the camp experience.

Wilcox said she wants to work in health care because "I want to have a job that helps people, and makes a difference in their lives." Wilcox is interested in being a family physician, but is open to other options. "With help from my career development class, I have been able to research different health careers. I had no idea there were so many to choose from."

Trumm said she is interested in learning more about pharmacy. She hopes the camp will help her understand different options in career planning and where she can attend college for her career choice.

Trumm and Wilcox will stay in the UW-La Crosse dorms while at camp, and have a chance to see UW-La Crosse, Virterbo, and Western Wisconsin Technical College. The students will learn what programs currently exist in the Wisconsin University system, Wisconsin Techinical College system, and Wisconsin private colleges.

"There are a lot of options in health care, whether you want to earn a two-year degree or attend a doctorate program," said Mary Sprosty, Community Relations Coordinator for Boscobel Area Health Care. "This camp allows students to explore a diverse range of careers available in Wisconsin."
