Boscobel students attend medical exploration day

Jeremiah Dilley, Senior; Jodie Haney, Senior; Dr. Thomas Pelz, Medical Staff Director at Boscobel Area Health Care; Brittnie Peer, Freshman; and Mary Sprosty, Community Relations Coordinator at Boscobel Area Health Care.
Boscobel Area Health Care sponsored three students to attend the Medical Exploration Day at UW-Platteville on November 8, 2008.
Seniors Jodie Haney and Jeremiah Dilley and Freshman Brittnie Peer spent the day learning about different medical professions, including pharmacy, nursing, lab technician, physician assistant, physical therapist, optometrist, dentist, and chiropractor.
All three students said their favorite part of the day was the three-hour cadaver lab. Haney said they were able to see the cause of death, and view the muscles, tendons, bones, and organs. "My favorite was seeing the heart. You see pictures in text books, but to see how it really works was fascinating," she said.
Haney said "becoming a doctor has been my goal for a long time, and I think it is so important to help people that can't help themselves."
Peer, who is interested in a nursing career, says she is interested in working in a rural hospital because "you can concentrate on caring for your patients better." She added "You can also learn more and get more experience by working in a rural hospital, because you get to work in more than one area."
Dilley said he became interested in medicine after working at Bohlman's Pharmacy. "I have been able to see a different side of the medical world, and I like what I saw."
The students were able to meet with Boscobel Area Health Care Medical Staff Director, Dr. Thomas Pelz, upon returning from the Medical Exploration Day. Boscobel Area Health Care paid the tuition for the one-day program for all three students.
